We’re seeking nominations from members who wish to serve on the Warren County Astronomical Society Board of Directors.

The current board has voted to expand the Board of Directors from 7 to 11 members, creating new opportunities to support WCAS members and the public.

All WCAS members are eligible to be candidates for a board seat. 

The deadline for nominations is Nov. 30.

Elections will be held online in December. New board members will serve three-year terms that begin in January.

What Your Directors Do

Members of the WCAS Board of Directors oversee all activities of our nonprofit group, including our programs, finances, operating agreements with the Warren County Park District and Camp Joy, and ensuring that members are supported in their pursuit of our shared astronomy hobby.

Our bylaws assign specific duties to four officers:

  • President: Leads all WCAS activities, collaborates with the other officers and directors, and represents WCAS before our partners and the public.
  • Vice President: Assists and substitutes for the president if he/she is unavailable or unable to serve.
  • Treasurer: Maintains all financial records, coordinates our budget, and keeps the other board members up to date on our financial position.
  • Secretary: Maintains all WCAS records and important documents; records minutes of all board meetings and decisions made by the board.

Additional director roles added by the current board to the Board of Directors include:

  • Membership: Recruit, sign-up, and retain members; onboard new members, and maintain membership records
  • Astronomy Education: Create monthly content about what’s visible in the night sky for use by our volunteers at public events, and for sharing with the public at events and online.
  • Community Outreach: Coordinate with community groups that request astronomy programs at WCAS observatories and/or at their private facilities and events; Actively solicit opportunities for WCAS members to provide astronomy programs to schools, youth, businesses, and other community organizations.
  • Member at Large: Represent all members by advocating for programs, equipment, and services that benefit WCAS members.
  • Public Events: Schedule monthly stargazing events at FBO and RAH, coordinate with WCPD and Camp Joy to ensure facility availability, and publicize public events by updating our website calendar, Facebook Events listings, and alerting members on GroupMe. Coordinates members to ensure we have adequate staffing by trained observatory operators and other members who bring personal telescopes.
  • Member Education and Events: Schedule monthly activities for members to learn more about specific astronomy topics, equipment, and how-to lessons.Coordinates chapter and member participation in Astronomical League activities.
  • Past President: The 11th board member is the immediate past president. Jeff Blazey, one of the WCAS founders and our president from 2012 to 2022, serves in this role.
